Characters

Here's a brief introduction to some of the major characters in Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto, complete with profile images! Each profile gives information regarding appearance, traits, personalities, voice actor/actresses and much more!
If you have any information regarding characters I don't have here, feel free to contact me and let me know and I'll add it as soon as possible!

Also, a spoiler warning is posted a little lower than half way until the end of the page. If you have not watched episodes 8 and onwards and do not want to be spoiled, DON'T READ PAST THE WARNING!

Taruto

Name: Taruto
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Purple/Blue
Eye Colour: Purple/Pink
VA: Hisayo Mochizuki (Japanese), Jessica Straus (English)

Short Bio:
Taruto is the cute main character of the story, and seems to believe she is the Kinka Princess of the 'fairy tale' most cats in Okashina City talk about.

Her master is Iori, and she lives in a big house with him, his sister and his niece, Kinako. She gets on well with Iori (she's very attached to him) and (I assume) his sister, but she doesn't seem to like Kinako very much in both anime and manga form. She's pretty scared of Kinako in the manga, but their series relationship lightens up a little more after episode 5.

She is able to use 'magic', but the only time it ever seems to make any difference is when her 'inner self' lends a hand. Otherwise, the majority of the time, it ends up making things worse than they were to begin with! But since she's a strong believer in the story of the Kinka and the legend of Ganashe, so a few negative occasions aren't going to bring her down!

Chitose

Name: Chitose
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (Japanese Bobtail)
Hair Colour: Brown
Eye Colour: Dark Red/Brown
VA: Maria Yamamoto (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

Short Bio:
Chitose is one of Taruto's two best friends throughout the series.
Chitose is a traditional japanese bobtail cat in her cat form, though in her 'human' form she does have a tail.

She stays with her owner the majority of the time at the 'Golden Shop', a candy store in Okashina City famed for it's mysterious location and of course, it's fantastic candy.

As expected, she's much more polite and traditional compared to the other cats we meet - always saying please and thank you throughout, bowing to others, and being generally pleasant. Though she is very polite and soft spoken, she has a big obsession with Taruto's tail and is almost always clinging to it, regardless of what Taruto thinks!

Charlotte

Name: Charlotte
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (Persian)
Hair Colour: Blond
Eye Colour: Blue
VA: Masayo Kurata (Japanese), Lisa Enochs (English)

Short Bio:
Charlotte is one of Taruto's two best friends throughout the series.
Charlotte is a pure bred persian who is best friends with Chitose, and is always staying with her. Charlotte, however, is a stray cat and doesn't have anywhere to stay permanently, usually resulting in her staying around the Golden Shop at night.

Charlotte is brassy and grumpy the majority of the time and doesn't really care about the story of the Kinka and Byou at all, simply passing it off as a simple fairytale. She usually calls Taruto and her 'magic', claiming that she's trying too hard to do something she can't do, and that she might as well give up and continue her life as a regular cat.

Kakipi

Name: Kakiamon (Kakipi for short)
Gender: Male
Species: Flying Squirrel
Hair Colour: Brown
Eye Colour: Black
VA: Yoshiko Kamei (Japanese), Robert Klein (English)

Short Bio:
Kakipi is a flying squirrel who lost his ability to fly after being stranded in the loft of Taruto's new house with nothing to eat or drink for weeks. When Taruto goes searching to find out what the scratching from upstairs is, she discovers him and her 'magic' helps him to fly again.

Kakipi is like Taruto's sidekick and is almost always by her side wherever she is, or is bringing good or bad news to Taruto.

Kakipi is the one who originally introduced Taruto to the idea of her being a princess, and well, it's stuck ever since - even if Taruto and Kakipi are the only two to believe it. He has his doubts about her magic but he's always reminding Taruto about the story of the Kinka and how if she is the princess she'd better get good at magic somehow!

Iori

Name: Iori Monaka
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Hair Colour: Brown
Eye Colour: Green
VA: Hiroki Takahashi (Japanese), Greg Lastrapes (English)

Short Bio:
Iori is absent minded and obsessed with cooking, and is also the owner of Taruto. He's always paying attention to details when cooking or reading about cooking, but otherwise, because of his gentle and easy-going lifestyle, he's oblivious of pretty much everything that's going on in the world around him.

He's very fond of Taruto, but because he's unable to understand her and only sees her as a regular cat, he may seem quite ignorant or stupid - but it's really just a side effect of his lack of understanding and losing track of.. well, pretty much everything.

He's a victim of 'love at first sight' with Anzuko and for the majority of the series he's trying to impress her somehow by either cooking her something or by trying to find something to buy for her.

Iori is Kinako's uncle, and lives in the same house as her and his own sister (who is never seen in the series whatsoever).

Kinako

Name: Kinako Monaka
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Hair Colour: Brown
Eye Colour: Blue
VA: Kyoko Tsuruno (Japanese), Laurel Hatfield (English)

Short Bio:
Kinako is Iori's niece, and lives with him and her mother alongside Taruto. She isn't very fond of cats after a childhood incident that made her surly towards both them and her grandmother, but she tries to get on well with them - even if it pushes her to her limit from time to time.

Kinako's quite a tomboy and has a completely different outlook on life to Iori. She's energetic and has a good spirit, but it's usually in a 'for-better-for-worse' kind of situation.

Because Iori's always daydreaming about cooking or Anzuko, Kinako gets lonely a lot of them time. In episode 3, she meets up with Geppei and their silly fights and differences force them into becoming friends. So whenever she's bored with sitting around doing nothing or listening to Iori blather on about food, she's usually hanging out with Geppei somewhere.

Anzuko

Name: Anzuko Doumyouji
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Hair Colour: Brown
Eye Colour: Red
VA: Akemi Okamura (Japanese), Sherrie Jackson (English)

Short Bio:
Anzuko is a rabid cat "collector", and will stop at nothing to add Taruto to her collection. She lives in a large mansion in Okashina City that's full of different breeds of cats and is covered in various kinds of cat decor.

She's always following Taruto around town, chasing her with a net, hoping that someday she'll finally add her to her ever-growing collection. But she usually gets stopped somehow by Iori spazzing or offering her something.

She's already got a large collection of cats, which are generally spoiled rotten and groomed 24/7 to keep them looking as good as new. Each of her cats are very loyal toward her, and are willing to help her if there's ever any trouble in her mansion.

Geppei

Name: Geppei Ogaki
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Hair Colour: Black
Eye Colour: Green
VA: Daisuke Sakaguchi (Japanese), Jimmy Keegan (English)

Short Bio:
Geppei meets Kinako in episode 3 after coincidentially meeting her in the vacant triangle lot in Okashina City, and ever since, they've hung around together.

Geppei is a strong character to begin with and believes he rules over every other kid in the city - but Kinako soon proves he isn't after they clash and fight each other over who owns supremacy over the vacant lot they met in. After discovering he's no match for her, they put their differences aside and become friends, proceeding to work together to figure out and unravel the many mysteries in Okashina City and the areas around it.

Geppei is also the owner of Garret (or Gallette, whichever you prefer), and they're pretty much inseperable - apart from when Taruto gets in the way, of course.

Garret

Name: Garret (dubbed as Gallette)
Gender: Male
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Blond
Eye Colour: Red (hidden behind sunglasses)
VA: Akira Ishida (Japanese), David Goldstein (English)

Short Bio:
Garret is Geppei's cat, and is always with him, no matter where he goes.

He has a very good knowledge of surroundings and the legend of Ganache, even if he doesn't talk about it very often. When he and Taruto get lost in episode 8, he expresses this knowledge and starts to wonder for himself whether Taruto really is the Kinka princess - and if not, what is her connection to the Kinka legend?

Garret as a character is, regardless of what he does, very mysterious - and very little about his own personality and character is uncovered in the series itself.

Chiffon

Name: Chiffon (Shiho for short)
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Silver
Eye Colour: Blue
VA: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Sarah Sido (English)

Short Bio:
Chiffon is a very friendly cat (if not a little distrustworthy of others) who is very wise and knows a lot of information about Ganache, the Kinka and the Byou.

She is very helpful to Taruto and everyone else and is always willing to give an answer to whatever kinds of questions she is asked; whether it's important or trivial. Now and again she'll give a cold, hard answer to a question and refuse to believe any other sides to the story, but she never means to be off-putting or cruel in any way.

She has a short temper from time to time (especially concerning Rakugan) and generally isn't willing to believe anything without written proof.

Rakugan

Name: Rakugan
Gender: Male
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Turquoise
Eye Colour: Black
VA: Kazuki Yao (Japanese), Robert Clotworthy (English)

Short Bio:
Rakugan is a so called 'magician' who is willing to help Taruto, regardless of the fact he has no idea how to control or manipulate magic. The majority of his skills are based on kehou - illusions, or deception - but he still maintains the title of a magician.

Rakugan is a much older cat than the others, and is therefore, much scarier than the others and likes to play tricks on them - especially on Taruto. However, he is a good friend and is willing to help Taruto, no matter what kind of sticky situation she might be in!

As well as being a joker around the younger cats, he also likes to mock Chiffon and try to use his 'magic' at any given time - whether it's for teleporting away, decieving others, or anything else that takes his fancy!

Potechi

Name: Potechi (dubbed as Chips)
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Red
Eye Colour: Orange
VA: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Elisa Dease (English)

Short Bio:
Potechi is the leader of the two 'henchmen' who cause trouble all over Okashina City under the command of Madam Willow. Together with Nachos, she causes trouble in all kinds of ways for everyone in the city!

Potechi collects bottles and glass containers, keeping a large collection of them safe in the Forest of the Lost. While Potechi seems greedy and surly over this kind of thing, she is actually afraid of her collection being damaged or stolen - regardless of the fact almost all of hers were stolen!

While she might seem tough compared to the others, she's very fragile when she's put in an awkward position or when she's got to make a major decision, and generally ends up giving in - with a little convincing from Nachos.

Nachos

Name: Nachos
Gender: Male
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Blue
Eye Colour: Green
VA: Kaori Mizuhashi (Japanese), Ben Salisbury (English)

Short Bio:
Nachos is the second of the two 'henchmen' who cause trouble in Okashina City, and most certainly the most out of place of the two. Nachos is a quiet, calm character who rarely knows what he's meant to be doing or how to handle anything, but is easily convinced and generally follows orders - regardless of the fact they never really turn out according to plan.

Nachos is obsessed with Taruto and is and is almost always commenting on how cute she is, no matter what she's doing or wearing. But of course, since he's part of the 'opposition' (according to Potechi), he always seems to be told off somehow, even if it doesn't make any major difference.

Nachos is (apparently) male, but with a very, very feminine appearance.

Spoiler Warning!!

The following profiles contain spoilers for the end of the Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto series. Though some of them are subtle, they can still ruin the end of the series for anyone who hasn't finished watching it in it's entirity.

Please be careful when reading if you don't want the series to be spoiled!!

Madam Willow

Name: [Madam] Willow
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Green
Eye Colour: Green
VA: Akemi Okamura (Japanese), Melodee Spevack (English)

Short Bio:
Madam Willow is one of the first characters to give an order of finding Taruto. While she seems dark and 'evil' to begin, her motives are nothing of the sort - because while she started as curious, her curiousity evolved into a much larger-scale plan.

Her two lackies are Potechi and Nachos, who she gives orders to, whether they like it or not. Both of them are very loyal to her, but are completely unaware of her past and her links to the Kinka tribe.

After being saved by her when she was near death, Madam Willow is now loyal to her own 'owner' (Hagi Kasutera) who lives in Castella Mansion, the so-called 'Witch's Mansion' at the edge of Okashina City after she fell ill and was unable to protect herself.

Hagi

Name: Hagi Kasutera
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Hair Colour: Brown
Eye Colour: Light Purple/Lilac
VA: Toko Aoyama (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

Short Bio:
Hagi was once a famous fortune teller in Castella Hall until she fell ill and the mansion was seemingly cursed.

She took care of Madam Willow after she nearly died and kept taking care of her, regardless of how Willow reacted to her kindness. However, when she fell ill herself, Willow stayed with her rather than leaving to ensure she was protected from harm.

When she was still a fortune teller, she was looked up to by various other aspiring fortune tellers, including Madam Manju, who was once one of her apprentices.

Madam Manju

Name: [Madam] Manju
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Hair Colour: Light Purple/Lilac
Eye Colour: Pink
VA: Kurumi Mamiya (Japanese), Elisa Dease (English)

Short Bio:
Madam Manju is a fortuneteller that apparently once worked for Hagi Kasutera in Castella Mansion as a maid; when she was actually an apprentice.

While Madam Manju isn't exactly the most trustworthy of people to some, her predictions are almost always correct, even if they are a little hard to unwind and understand. Because of this, many people seem wary of her, regardless of her skills.

She always has some advice to give no matter what situation people are in, and is always willing to lend a hand (or a prediction) in a sticky situation.

Cyclo

Name: Cyclo
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Grey
Eye Colour: Gold (can turn purple)
VA: Toko Aoyama (Japanese), Kimberly Stanphill (English)

Short Bio:
Cyclo is the leader of the three Byou cats who appear from episode 8 onwards to capture Taruto after suspicion that she is the Kinka Princess after some apparent sightings in Ganache.

She appears to be angry and vicious no matter what the results of her actions are or what they may end up turning into, or how difficult a task is - she's very determined in anything she does.

Obviously, like almost every other Byou cat, she has strange markings made up of pinkish lines and circles (which seems to be like a trademark or symbol within the Byou more than anything). She is able to use Kehou (illusions) and she uses them whenever needed, and on whoever it's needed depending on the scenario and what's the "prize" after using such techniques (so in these cases, the "prize" is Taruto).

However, she does seem to prefer physical techniques (punching, kicking, using a sword) over illusionary techniques - she participates in one-on-ones (or three-on-ones) without using illusions more than anything, and uses her brawn more than her brains in most cases, making her ambitions much more difficult than they'd first appeared to be.
Both Aspa and Rutame seem to use more "brutal" or physical techniques over illusionary techniques too - unless Cyclo uses techniques first and they then join in on the act to emphasise the effects (like on Anzuko in episode 11).

Rutame

Names: Rutame
Gender: Male
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Blond
Eye Colour: Black
VA: Koichi Kuriyama (Japanese), Scott Holst (English)

Short Bio:
Rutame is one of Cyclo's two henchmen who are a lot more bumbling and stupid than Cyclo. They both generally follow her lead more than anything without thinking and don't really have any purpose other than acting as a possible "gang" for Cyclo, and really have no idea about what they're doing or more likely, what they're supposed to be doing.

Rutame is the blond villain and the taller, skinnier, sneakier looking of the two. He also has a selection of markings over his body, with the most distinctive ones on his face (which are green in colour). He definately seems to be a little more mischevious than Aspa because of his overall look and his reaction to Kehou when it's used, and he seems to have a somewhat sharper mind. However, it doesn't really get him anywhere during his time in the series - he ends up seeming more like a clingy second sidekick to Cyclo more than anything else.

When Rutame is massively relied on by Cyclo, he gets violent and weak very quickly compared to how he first appears to be. He automatically goes straight to relying on Aspa when he's in any danger, regardless of the fact that the sometimes it's partially his fault to begin with.

Aspa

Names: Aspa
Gender: Male
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Dark Green
Eye Colour: Black
VA: Toshitaka Shimizu (Japanese), Rick Robles (English)

Short Bio:
Aspa is the second of Cyclo's henchmen. He is one of few cats who survived Priestess Saburet's sacrifice in episode 8 and then carried on with their duties given by the Byou Emporer, so he has to be somewhat trustworthy and indeed, quite loyal. His Byou markings are blue, but are much more subtle than Cyclo or Rutames', and are generally smaller and less obvious. The most noticeable one is on his forehead.

Aspa is the green-haired, larger villain who seems to get in the way more than anything else. He seems to have a much calmer temperature than Rutame, but his sluggish, stereotyped behavior is still pretty mean. He seems to work best with physical "attacks" rather than Kehou like the other Byou, but his skills are definately far superior, but that's probably because of his larger size. He's also skilled with a sword as well as other objects (like a frying pan).

Pie

Names: Pai/Pie A La Mode
Gender: Female
Species: Cat (exact species unknown)
Hair Colour: Purple/Blue
Eye Colour: Purple/Pink
VA: ????? (Japanese), Maria Martin (English)

Short Bio:
Pie's only major appearance is in episode 12, when she reveals herself to Taruto and her friends for once and for all as Taruto's twin sister. Her full title is Pie A La Mode, the 280th Queen of the Royal Matah Family.

It turns out that while Taruto and her friends have been sorting out problems, Pie has been in Ganache and ruling over the Kinka. She is the (only just) younger sister of Taruto and possesses the stronger magic of the two, and she is able to command it at will, so by default, she was selected as the Queen.

By using her magic to cover up her presence, Pie was able to hide from Taruto while she was taking care of things in Ganache, but was still able to help Taruto at times (particularly when the wand appeared for Taruto - the wand was her influence).

Because Pie is in charge of Ganache, her influences on Taruto are few and far between - so she is only able to contact her every once in a while. She's like an "inner self" or "conscience" to Taruto before the truth is revealed about her connection to her, and she is only able to stay with her for a short while.

Pie is also the one who sent the three mysterious Kinka knights looking for Taruto to Okashina City, and they were one of her only links to what she was doing and how she was doing apart from her infrequent visits.

Pie is one of the less-well understood characters in the series, but her influence on the entire series and how everything turns out over time is very important to all of the characters as well as herself.
